![]() Plus no one has done this to them in the East this year, its a big adjustment they have to make. The opponent gets gun shy worrying about turnovers and hesitates. The forechecking game if you commit to it is great because its like boxing and working in body shots early. Sometimes they are trying to make plays on the board or at the point in the offensive zone where I'm thinking just dump it low and punish them some more. The Avs have dominated forechecking-wise. Maybe they stopped playing their normal game later in game 2 and turned to the other strategy we noticed, but its not like they were conserving themselves in Denver for game 3 and 4.Īnd all this talk about trap coming to force a dump and chase game, well let's go. ![]() Were they really not trying the first two games of a STANLEY CUP FINAL? No way I'm buying that. I don't understand this talk of best effort from the Lightning coming. The series never should have went 6, either. They were skating downhill in games 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The rest of the series? The Avs weren't slowed down one bit by St. It was one of the weirdest performances from an entire team I have ever seen. Pucks were bouncing everywhere, players couldn't complete tape-to-tape passes, everyone was falling. The players even acknowledged post-game that they were all horrible. The Blues slowed the Avs down in game 2 where damn near everything went wrong for Colorado. They cannot keep up with Colorado otherwise. I am 100% expecting a slog-fest in games 3 and 4 where the Lightning sit back in a 1-3-1 or even 1-4 and try to slow the neutral zone down to a snail's pace. We saw last night any time the Lightning even attempted aggression on the forecheck it led to odd man rushes/breakaways for Avalanche players. Tampa Bay can't be aggressive, they have to double down and trap the Avs. Sakic was clearly right to extend him another 2 years early and get that distraction out of the way. Instead he controls what he can control which is the systems and tactics. I for one am glad he isn't the type to start whining and complaining about refs every game. Softly spoken, but a great analytical and hockey mind. Jon Cooper has the silverware, but I have no doubt Bednar can and will too. He himself has adjusted and improved at in-game and inter game adjustments. I am firmly of the belief now that Bednar is the best coach in the NHL. Sakic deserves credit for bringing in the right guys for the system, but it's bednars system and he and his staff have taught it so well to all the players. The systems are intense but when everyone works the way they are intended to, this team is an unstoppable force. Yes we have great players, but there are plenty of great players in the league playing for teams that do not play as cohesively as the Avs. Bednar deserves a f***ton of credit for this team.
